Whitecap Mountains is hands down one of my favorite ski resorts in the Midwest. The factors that make it one of my favorites, though, are rather varied, but when you combine them together it adds up to an amazing downhill skiing experience!

One of the most important factors is that Whitecap is much less developed than many other resorts. This home-grown feel makes for a much more laid back skiing experience, and the crowds aren't quite as large either.

However, while Whitecap may not have all of the condos and super-ritzy lodges, they have plenty of rowdy terrain to ride! Compared to all of the resorts near Ironwood and those further south in Wisconsin, Whitecap takes the prize for the gnarliest terrain. There are bands of cliffs everywhere just begging to be dropped, and several steep, narrow, drop-littered double black diamond runs that are too sick to even think about grooming.

Being so close to the Great Lakes, Whitecap receives pretty respectable amounts of natural snow too, so powder days aren't as rare as you might think. Been a while since it's snowed? Take to the trees and try to find some soft stuff hidden away from the groomer-riding masses.
